“As a Christian, I never thought I’d experience anxiety or panic attacks. My first panic attack occurred while I was at the store when I realized I had waited too long to eat and was worried that my blood sugar was low. I quickly opened and drank a bottle of fresh-squeezed orange juice, but I not only didn’t feel better, I actually felt even worse. It felt like everything around me was getting darker and I was about to pass out, so I started to eat something quickly but my throat was closing up and I couldn’t swallow the food. It felt like my body was shutting down. I even said what I thought was a final goodbye to my daughters who were with me because I literally thought I was dying.

My husband shortly took me to the ER and I felt like I was going to pass out again. They did an EKG, CAT scan, and blood work. Everything came back normal. The next day I seemed to be back to my old happy self. It wasn’t until one night that same week, when I drove to the store, that an overwhelming feeling came over me seemingly out of nowhere. I drove back home as fast and safely as I could. I was so scared, not knowing what was going on with me — my mind and my body. My husband ended up having to hold me and rock me in bed to help me feel calm.

In the weeks to come, he’d have to take time off work to come home and be with me because I wasn’t able to cope through the anxiety without him near me. Sometimes I’d feel physical symptoms so real I thought something was terribly wrong with my health. At times it would feel like my arm was going paralyzed, but most of the time I felt a squeezing pressure on the sides of my head that got more intense as I got more anxious. I paced and walked a lot too — 16k steps a day, never leaving home (indoors and in my backyard).

It was very debilitating as I didn’t feel safe leaving the house for long and always had to take valerian root tea or a calming supplement to help me. I couldn’t drive for 3 months, and I was someone who could jump in my car and drive 10+ hours often. But I lived in a state of fear that another “attack” would catch me by surprise — which stopped all my traveling, even a trip to the nearest grocery store. It was a dark time in my life.

My daughters, who were 7 and 8, had to prepare most of their own meals like sandwiches and easy-to-grab foods because I wasn’t able to cook for them. I was highly sensitive to sounds and would stay in my bedroom most of the day with ocean sounds playing in the background to help keep me calm. Every day, I waited anxiously for my husband to get home, and I would be on the phone with close friends or family as they tried to help me through my thoughts and feelings about what was going on with me. It was easily the darkest and most trying time in my life.

After 3 ER visits and everything coming back normal, my best friend told me she thought I was having panic attacks. It was so hard for me to accept that as a woman of faith. At times I was embarrassed and ashamed, but not enough to stop me from reaching out for help. I had so many fears — afraid I would lose my girls and my family because I felt like I had lost my mind and would be deemed unfit to be a parent. I felt hopeless, like panic and anxiety was my new normal and a life sentence.

After my doctor told me that anxiety attacks were normal and prescribed me Zoloft, I felt so discouraged as I didn’t want to be dependent on medication. Out of desperation, I got on my knees and prayed the most earnest prayer I have ever prayed. I prayed:

“God, there are 6 billion people on this planet. There has GOT to be ONE person that has overcome panic and anxiety. Please lead me to that ONE person that has overcome panic attacks — not just managing it, or coping with it, but has COMPLETELY overcome it.”

I got off my knees and typed into my web browser “Living Panic Free” and a link to Michael Norman’s YouTube videos popped up. I watched the first one and immediately was filled with HOPE. Hope that I could be free from the paralyzing fear and darkness I was surrounded in.

After watching the free episodes of Michael’s Panic Free TV (I would watch them 2–3 times each so I was sure I understood the information), a week later I started Michael’s online course and it was full of so much amazing information. Facing your fears can be extremely scary, but with Michael’s not only professionalism but gentle, understanding spirit, I started believing and building confidence that I would one day make it to the other side.
