Hi, I’m Michael.
I help growth-oriented people outgrow anxiety, wounds from the past, and other limiting patterns—often in just 1–3 sessions—even when nothing else has worked.
Over the last 25 years, I’ve had the privilege of working with everyone from billionaires and music legends to actors, doctors, therapists, entrepreneurs — and everyday people who were simply done suffering.
But even after years of helping others transform their lives, I found myself facing a challenge I never imagined—one that brought everything I believed into sharp, undeniable focus.
More on that in a moment…

Former Research Scientist • 103 Countries • 25 Years • 6M+ Lives Touched
I’m a former research scientist, and over the past 25+ years as an Automatic Change specialist, I’ve helped clients from more than 103 countries.
While I’ve helped people with nearly every issue under the sun, I’m best known for helping clients transform anxiety, panic, and the lingering effects of past experiences.
I’m especially passionate about helping growth-oriented achievers outgrow limiting patterns, so they can perform at their best, enjoy more of life, and make a bigger difference in the world.
You might know me from:
- Panic Free TV, which has helped thousands finally end panic attacks and enjoy a 100% normal life.
- Instant Calm, my free deep relaxation session listened to by over 4 million people.
- Or through a referral from a client, doctor, or therapist who saw fast, dramatic results when other approaches had failed.
They Told Me I’d Never Walk Again
Years ago, I was in a wheelchair—getting weaker by the day. Most people had given up on me.
Two doctors and a physical therapist even told me I’d never walk again.
Nothing was working.
But I was never going to give up.
Eventually, I found a world-class physical therapist who believed in me—and saw possibilities others missed.
She helped me rise from that chair… and stand beside my mother on my wedding day.
Only later did I learn the diagnosis:
Multiple Sclerosis.
My case is less aggressive than my mother’s, who was paralysed from the neck down.
But the experience reinforced a truth that has guided my work from the beginning…

With my inspirational mother on my wedding day.
The difference between a standard approach and a world-class one isn’t subtle. It can change the entire trajectory of your life.
I walked again.
And for over 25 years, I’ve helped others do the same—on the inside.
How? Through the little-known science of Automatic Change.
(More on that in a moment…)
It’s Not Your Fault
You might have tried therapy, self-help, coaching—or just sheer willpower. You’ve worked hard. Maybe you’ve even done everything “right.”
And yet... you’re still not where you want to be.
Here’s the truth:
It’s not your fault.
As W. Edwards Deming famously said:
"A bad system will beat a good person every time.”
And nowhere is this more true than in the fields of mental health and personal change.
Shockingly, Therapy Outcomes Haven’t Improved in More Than 50 Years
Ironically, in a field dedicated to change, progress in mental health has largely stagnated for decades.
Despite decades of research, therapy outcomes haven’t improved in over 50 years—not because solutions don’t exist, but because the field is stuck in conventional models of change.
As Thomas Kuhn observed, new ideas are rarely rejected for lack of evidence but because they threaten the dominant paradigm.
That's why many of the best solutions are ignored. Not because they don’t work, but because they fall outside conventional thinking.
If you believe results matter more than dogma, you’ll understand why I’ve chosen a different path.
As Nobel Laureate Bertrand Russell reminded us:
“The fact that an opinion has been widely held is no evidence whatever that it is not utterly absurd.”
Most people stay stuck because of outdated models.
You don’t have to.
If you’re ready for a kind of change that is fast, natural, and lasting— I’d love to help.
I discovered that even though the brain has two ‘systems’ for change, mainstream methods ignore the most powerful one.
Automatic Change, Without Willpower
For over 130 years, scientists—from Nobel laureates like Ivan Pavlov to Daniel Kahneman—have studied how our brains create thoughts, emotions, and behaviours.
Their groundbreaking discoveries reveal two brain ‘systems’ that drive psychological change:
- The Effortful System: slow, deliberate, and reliant on willpower.
- The Automatic System: fast, effortless, unconscious—and far more powerful than most people imagine.
Yet despite these revolutionary insights, most change methods still rely on willpower—perpetuating the belief that change must be slow, difficult, and fragile.
What most people don’t realise is just how fast and automatic change can be—when we engage the Automatic System.
When the right conditions are created, change happens in an instant—sometimes from just one sentence, one realisation, or one powerful emotional shift that transforms how we see our situation.
I’ve spent the last 25+ years mastering this skillset.
That doesn’t mean effort has no place. We don't want to swing to the other extreme and totally ignore The Effortful System.
But we never want to make the mistake most approaches make—ignoring the brain’s most powerful system for change: the Automatic System.
It’s the heart of all lasting transformation—allowing us to create real change as fast and effortlessly as humanly possible.

A Lifelong Passion for Science

With my father, whose groundbreaking work as a scientist sparked my own passion for discovery. Next to Himeji Castle, near my home in Japan.
Growing up, my father (an award-winning doctor, professor, and scientist honoured with an Order of Australia by the Queen) sparked my love for science.
Dinners at home frequently included conversations with world-renowned scientists, fuelling my lifelong curiosity about how the world works.
That curiosity led me to pursue undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in science, eventually becoming, for a short time, a full-time research scientist.
I was on track to follow a similar path as my father in academia.
But one day, in my university library, I stumbled upon…
The Genius Who Changed My Path

A family photo of Milton H. Erickson, M.D., was a gift to me from his daughter. It hangs in my office as a daily reminder of his wisdom and legacy.
Milton Erickson—widely regarded as the greatest therapist who ever lived — was the Einstein of personal change.
Clinical psychology and mental health lack the precision of the hard sciences I first trained in.
And yet…
Erickson brought a level of precision and rigour to human change that still remains decades ahead of its time.
The challenge?
While Einstein left behind equations anyone could study, Erickson left behind brilliance that almost no one—even today—can fully reproduce.
For over 25 years, mastering Erickson’s skill set has been my all- consuming passion.
I’ve been personally mentored by some of Erickson’s most remarkable students—many of whom have taken aspects of his work even further than he did.
And I continue to do my best to honour their legacy—standing on the shoulders of giants, and carrying their work forward.
Want to experience the kind of change Erickson’s patients did?
(Only for those serious about real change—not more talk.)
Even though no two people are alike, modern ‘evidence-based’ therapy still tries to squeeze people into a one-size-fits-all Procrustean bed.
Erickson knew what complexity science now confirms:
Only by tailoring everything to fit the beautiful uniqueness that is you do truly optimal results become possible.
Why I Think Across Borders—and Disciplines
“A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions.” — Oliver Wendell Holmes
I was born in Zimbabwe, raised in Australia, and lived in seven countries before settling in Japan with my wife and daughter.
Just as living in different cultures expanded my understanding of people, traveling in and through multiple scientific fields has deepened my understanding of change.
As George Iles noted, “The boundaries which mark off one field of science from another are purely artificial.”
By integrating insights from multiple disciplines, solutions emerge that transcend the limits of any single way of seeing the world.
These days, I live in Japan with my wife and daughter.
Our home and my office look out over one of my favourite places in the world — Himeji Castle, one of Japan’s most iconic landmarks.
I still feel grateful every time I walk around it.
“Michael is one of the best in the world.”
“I’ve known Michael for over 20 years. In my view, he is one of the best. He will leave no stone unturned, no avenue unexplored, to help you move forward and feel free again.”

The People I Love to Work With
From the outside, no one would guess I still have MS.
I live a full, rich life—but it means I must prioritise my health and energy.
This is why I am selective about who I work with one-on-one and can only take on a small number of clients each week.
I love working with good-hearted, growth-oriented individuals who take full responsibility for their lives—and just need the right kind of help to unlock the better life they know is possible.
If something inside you already knows it’s time for a real breakthrough—and you’re ready to experience real change that actually lasts—I’d love to help.
You don’t need to fight your way there. You just need the right kind of help.
(Only for those serious about real change—not more talk.)
“No one else does—or can do—what Michael does.”
